Fable Shows 18 Minutes of New Gameplay, Including Bowerstone and Combat
Fable has received an extended 18-minute gameplay demonstration at Gamescom 2026, giving players a much closer look at Playground Games' reboot, including a full quest, the city of Bowerstone and its combat systems.
The footage follows the game's Hero through Bowerstone before moving into a quest called The Last of the Greats, which centres on a character named Humphry the Golden. Playground Games also uses the presentation to show how exploration, combat and the game's wider world fit together.
A closer look at Bowerstone
One of the more detailed parts of the demonstration is Bowerstone, where the game features 400 NPCs. According to the information presented alongside the gameplay, these characters have their own homes, hobbies, traits and personalities, and are fully voiced.
The footage shows the Hero moving through the city and interacting with its inhabitants, while also visiting an owned home where their spouse and child live.
Rather than simply using Bowerstone as a backdrop, the demonstration puts its inhabitants and their daily lives directly into the gameplay.
Combat mixes melee, ranged attacks and magic
The new footage also provides another look at Fable's combat system. Playground Games is bringing back the series' familiar Strength, Skill and Will concepts in a revised form, allowing the Hero to switch between melee attacks, ranged weapons and magic.
The demonstration highlights several spells, including Fireball, Lightning, Blade, Lift, Rush, Push and Befowl. The different abilities can be combined with the game's other combat options as players deal with the enemies encountered during the quest.
The quest shown in the presentation gives a practical look at these systems rather than simply presenting them through a trailer.
Fable is coming in February 2027
Fable is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027. The game is being developed by Playground Games and is planned for Xbox Series X|S and PC, with the PC version also available through Xbox Play Anywhere and Game Pass.
The Gamescom presentation is one of the most substantial gameplay looks at Fable so far, focusing on a complete quest while providing additional details about Bowerstone, its NPC population and the systems players will use during combat.
