Blizzard has officially announced Diablo 5, the next mainline game in the Diablo series. The game is planned for spring 2029, and Blizzard has already revealed some major details about what players can expect.
But the biggest change is the story itself: Diablo has already won.
Diablo 5 takes place seven years after Diablo conquered Sanctuary. The heroes of the past failed to stop him, and players will now experience the world they were trying to save after its fall.
Diablo has conquered Sanctuary
Westmarch has become the centre of Diablo's invasion, with much of the region overrun by Hell. Most of the remaining humans have either been corrupted or forced into hiding, while powerful humans have been transformed into Dread Commanders.
These commanders are also changing the world around them. Their corruption will reshape the land, meaning areas can look different when players return to them later. Monsters, landmarks and even the terrain can change as Diablo's influence spreads.
The game will also bring back procedurally generated worlds for both dungeons and the overworld. The result is a world where players can never be completely sure what they will find around the next corner.
A caravan becomes your home
With the towns of Sanctuary destroyed, Diablo 5 takes a different approach to merchants and side characters. Instead of constantly travelling back to the same towns, players will build their own caravan of survivors.
As the story progresses, more survivors can join the caravan. They can become merchants, craftspeople and companions, while also providing side quests based around their own stories.
These aren't simply random characters waiting on the side of the road. They are people the player has chosen to bring along on the journey, making their stories part of the adventure.
New and returning classes
Blizzard has already confirmed several classes for Diablo 5. The Demon Hunter and Monk are returning, while the first completely new class is the Plague Knight.
The Plague Knight is a heavily armoured class that spreads disease across the battlefield and then consumes it for power.
Blizzard also says Diablo 5 will launch with more classes than any previous Diablo game, although the full lineup has not been revealed yet.
Diablo is at the centre of the story
Diablo is finally returning as the main threat. This time, he will shape the story from its opening moments rather than simply appearing as the final boss.
Players will also develop a unique connection with Diablo throughout the game. The story will explore whether they can resist his influence and potentially turn his own powers against him.
More changes are coming to itemization
Blizzard also gave players an early look at the game's itemization. Diablo 5 will feature item tiers, multi-slot items and the return of gear-based sets.
The team is also experimenting with stat requirements for items, although Blizzard stressed that some of these systems are still being worked on and are not necessarily final.
That is worth keeping in mind because Diablo 5 is still years away. Blizzard says this is only the beginning, with regular development updates planned from 2027 onwards as the team continues to take player feedback into account.
For now, Blizzard has confirmed a spring 2029 release window, but the exact release date and platforms have not yet been announced.
