Phantom Blade Zero Review - A Spectacular Martial Arts Adventure

Imagine a world where ancient Chinese martial arts meet mechanical monsters, deadly assassins and strange machines. That is the unusual setting of Phantom Blade Zero, an action game from S-GAME that blends traditional wuxia influences with dark fantasy and a distinctive mechanical style.

The game certainly hasn't gone unnoticed. Phantom Blade Zero sold more than 4 million copies in its first 72 hours, an impressive achievement for a new action game. But its appeal goes beyond a successful launch. With fast-paced combat, an unusual fantasy world and some spectacular boss encounters, there is plenty here to explore.

You play as Soul, an elite assassin who is framed for the murder of his organisation's leader and left with a fatal wound. Brought back from the brink of death, he discovers that he has just sixty-six days left to live. His journey becomes a race against time to uncover the truth, survive and find out who he can really trust.

Kungfupunk: A World Unlike Other Action Games

One of the first things that sets Phantom Blade Zero apart is its setting. Rather than relying on familiar medieval fantasy landscapes, the game creates a world where traditional Chinese architecture meets machinery, supernatural elements and dark fantasy.

S-GAME describes this style as Kungfupunk. Ancient temples and traditional villages exist alongside industrial structures, strange machines and unusual creatures. It is an unexpected combination, but one that gives the game a recognisable identity.

A Dark Martial Arts Fantasy

The world draws heavily from wuxia, a genre built around martial artists, honour, revenge and rival factions. Phantom Blade Zero takes those familiar ideas in a darker direction, mixing traditional martial arts influences with horror elements and mysterious technology.

This contrast gives the setting plenty of personality. Beautiful architecture and traditional surroundings sit alongside unsettling locations and mechanical creations, creating a world that feels different from most fantasy action games.

Soul's Journey: Sixty-Six Days to Survive

Phantom Blade Zero follows Soul, an elite assassin accused of murdering the leader of his organisation. After suffering a fatal injury, he is brought back to life, but the treatment comes with a terrible price: he has only sixty-six days left to live.

With former allies now hunting him, Soul sets out to clear his name and uncover the conspiracy behind the death of his master. Along the way, he encounters dangerous enemies, rival factions and characters whose loyalties are not always clear.

More Than a Simple Revenge Story

The sixty-six-day deadline gives the story a clear sense of urgency. There is a mystery to solve, a life to save and plenty of unanswered questions surrounding the people and organisations Soul encounters.

However, the narrative can take some effort to follow. There are plenty of unfamiliar names, relationships and factions to keep track of, while some of the more mysterious story elements are not immediately easy to understand. Players unfamiliar with wuxia storytelling may occasionally find themselves trying to piece together what is happening.

Fast, Fluid and Deep Combat

Combat is easily one of Phantom Blade Zero's biggest attractions. Fights are built around speed, timing and carefully choreographed martial arts movements. Soul can chain attacks together, dodge incoming strikes, counter enemies and unleash powerful techniques in quick succession.

At first glance, the action can look like a series of flashy animations and impressive combos. However, there is more to the system than simply pressing attack buttons. Learning enemy patterns, choosing the right moment to strike and managing your defensive options all play an important role.

The game combines elements of fast action games with its own approach to martial arts combat. It is not simply a traditional Soulslike, nor does it play exactly like a conventional hack-and-slash game. Its focus is on stylish, fast-moving encounters where timing and weapon choices can make a real difference.

Weapons That Change the Way You Fight

Weapon variety adds another layer to the combat. Phantom Blade Zero features more than thirty primary weapons, alongside a large selection of special weapons known as Phantom Edges.

Different weapons come with their own attacks, abilities and characteristics. You can experiment with combinations, switch between weapons during combat and find ways to connect different moves into longer attacks. This gives players more freedom than simply choosing one weapon and sticking with it throughout the adventure.

There are also special abilities and combat techniques to unlock and improve. As you become more familiar with the system, experimenting with weapon combinations and learning when to use different abilities can make a noticeable difference.

Not Everyone Will Enjoy the Combat System

Despite its depth, the combat has divided some players. Many enjoy its speed, weapon variety and responsive timing, while others feel that certain animations can make the action seem less direct than expected. The amount of movement and visual effects on screen can sometimes make it harder to feel completely in control of every exchange.

This is worth keeping in mind if you prefer very precise, straightforward combat. Phantom Blade Zero puts a lot of emphasis on presentation, and not every player will enjoy the balance between spectacular animations and direct control.

Boss Fights That Demand Your Attention

Ordinary enemies are one thing, but the major boss encounters are where Phantom Blade Zero really gets to show off its combat system. These opponents have their own attack patterns and abilities, forcing you to pay attention rather than simply attacking whenever you get the chance.

Some encounters are particularly cinematic, featuring enormous enemies and elaborate attack sequences. They create memorable moments and provide a welcome change of pace from the smaller fights along the way.

Learning When to Attack and When to Wait

Knowing when to attack is only half the battle. Recognising incoming strikes, finding openings and reacting at the right moment are all important parts of the experience. Dodging, blocking and well-timed counters can be just as important as dealing damage.

Difficulty is also a matter of personal preference. Some players may find certain encounters relatively forgiving, while others will appreciate the tougher challenges available. The different difficulty options help make the game more accessible without removing the opportunity to test your skills.

Exploration, Side Quests and World Design

Although combat takes centre stage, Phantom Blade Zero is not just a sequence of battles. Its environments contain alternative routes, hidden areas and optional paths that reward players who take the time to look around.

Some locations also connect to areas visited earlier, giving exploration a little more depth than simply moving from one arena to the next. Revisiting places and discovering routes that were previously inaccessible can add another layer to the adventure.

Side quests and optional activities provide additional reasons to explore. They can introduce new characters, offer more context about the world or lead to useful rewards. However, the experience is still strongly focused on its main action and combat encounters rather than offering the freedom of a huge open-world game.

A Different Approach to Soulslike Design

Phantom Blade Zero borrows some familiar ideas from Soulslike games, particularly when it comes to challenging enemies, learning attack patterns and carefully approaching encounters. However, it does not follow every convention of the genre.

For example, defeated enemies do not simply return every time you revisit a cleared area, and dying does not involve the usual loss of accumulated experience or currency associated with many Soulslike games. This creates a more forgiving structure and makes exploration feel less punishing.

Some players will appreciate this approach, while others may miss the familiar risk-and-reward loop of traditional Soulslike games. Either way, Phantom Blade Zero has its own ideas about how an action adventure should work.

A Distinctive Visual Style and Soundtrack

Phantom Blade Zero uses Unreal Engine 5, but its visual appeal goes beyond impressive technology. The developers have created a distinct artistic direction, combining traditional architecture, unusual machinery and dark fantasy imagery.

The character animations are particularly important to the game's identity. The martial arts influences are visible in the way Soul moves and fights, helping the action feel connected to the films and fighting styles that inspired the game.

More Than Just Impressive Graphics

The environments offer plenty of visual variety, from detailed traditional buildings to darker locations with a more unsettling atmosphere. The contrast between these places helps the world feel varied and gives different areas their own character.

The soundtrack also deserves attention. It combines traditional Chinese musical influences with more modern and aggressive sounds, including rock and metal elements. This unusual mix fits the game's setting and gives many of its action sequences extra energy.

Not every musical choice will appeal to everyone, but the combination of visuals, animation and sound helps Phantom Blade Zero establish a style of its own.

Where Phantom Blade Zero Could Be Better

Despite its distinctive setting and impressive combat, Phantom Blade Zero is not without weaknesses. The story has an interesting starting point, but its many characters, factions and mysteries can make it harder to follow than necessary.

The focus on combat also means that players looking for a huge open world with a wide range of activities may want more from the adventure. There is exploration and optional content, but fighting remains the main attraction.

Another issue is the health of certain enemies. Some regular opponents can take a surprising amount of damage before going down. When fights last longer than necessary, repeating similar attacks and combos can make the action feel less exciting. This is especially noticeable when several lengthy encounters follow one another.

There is also a difference of opinion about the combat itself. While many players enjoy its depth and responsiveness, others find that the elaborate animations sometimes make the action feel less direct. It is a matter of preference, but it is worth considering before buying the game.

What Could Be Better

Final Verdict: A Unique World Worth Fighting For

Phantom Blade Zero makes a strong impression with a world that feels different from most action games. Its combination of Chinese martial arts, dark fantasy and mechanical technology gives it a clear identity, while its fast-paced combat offers plenty of opportunities to experiment with different weapons and techniques.

The boss encounters are a highlight, and the visual style and soundtrack help create an experience that is easy to recognise. Exploration also adds more to the adventure than you might initially expect, even though combat remains at the centre of everything.

There are some drawbacks. The story can be difficult to follow, certain enemies take longer to defeat than they should, and the combat system will not feel equally satisfying to every player. Still, these issues do not take away from what makes the game stand out.

Phantom Blade Zero is a distinctive action adventure with plenty of style and an identity of its own. If you enjoy martial arts, challenging encounters and unusual fantasy worlds, it is well worth checking out.
