Squadron 42 Delayed Again as GTA 6 Forces Developers to Rethink Their Release Plans

Squadron 42 has been pushed out of 2026 and is now targeting Q2 2027. The latest delay comes with an unusual explanation: Cloud Imperium Games does not want to launch its long-awaited single-player game while Grand Theft Auto VI is dominating the gaming landscape.

Chris Roberts, director of Squadron 42 and head of Cloud Imperium Games, explained the decision in a new Letter From The Chairman.

The studio had previously planned to release Squadron 42 during the fourth quarter of 2026. That window has now been abandoned, with the team instead targeting the second quarter of 2027 after reviewing the available release periods.

GTA 6 is part of the reason for the delay

Roberts was unusually open about the challenges of launching Squadron 42 late in 2026.

Grand Theft Auto VI is currently scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, and Cloud Imperium Games expects Rockstar's blockbuster to dominate gaming coverage around its release.

That influence extends beyond traditional game sales. Roberts expects GTA 6 to attract enormous attention from gaming websites, YouTubers, streamers and other creators. Even though GTA 6 is currently scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S rather than PC, Roberts believes its impact on the wider gaming audience will still be enormous.

As a result, releasing Squadron 42 during the same period became increasingly unattractive. Rather than trying to compete for attention with Rockstar's next Grand Theft Auto, Cloud Imperium Games has moved the game into 2027.

It is a particularly notable admission because GTA 6 has not even released yet. Rockstar's game is already influencing how another major developer is thinking about its own launch window.

Other games are also moving away from the GTA 6 period

Squadron 42 is not the only game moving into 2027 as developers and publishers deal with an increasingly competitive release calendar.

Lords of the Fallen 2 was previously planned for 2026 but has since moved into Q1 2027. CI Games said the extra time would allow the studio to further polish the game and avoid a highly competitive holiday release period.

GTA 6 was not officially identified as the reason for that delay, so it would be misleading to claim that Rockstar's game directly caused the move. However, the timing illustrates the same problem facing publishers: launching a major game near one of the industry's biggest releases could make it considerably harder to attract attention.

There is also a more unusual example involving Danganronpa 2x2. The game's creator, Kazutaka Kodaka, discussed moving the project to 2027 while talking about GTA 6. Part of the reasoning was simply that he expected to spend a considerable amount of time playing Rockstar's game himself.

These cases are not identical, and not every game moving out of 2026 can be attributed to GTA 6. Still, they show how the enormous anticipation surrounding Rockstar's game is becoming a factor in release planning.

Squadron 42 has been in development for years

The new target adds another delay to the unusually long development of Squadron 42. Cloud Imperium Games has been working on the single-player Star Citizen project for years, with its planned release date changing several times during development.

The game was originally announced many years ago and has since grown into one of the industry's most prolonged development projects. The latest schedule puts its release in Q2 2027, although the studio has not provided a specific launch date.

According to Roberts, selected long-time backers and content creators are also expected to receive hands-on access to Squadron 42 in October. That should provide a more substantial look at the game's current state while development continues.

GTA 6 is becoming a release-calendar problem

There is a difference between a game being delayed specifically because of GTA 6 and a publisher choosing not to compete with an extremely crowded release window. That distinction is important when looking at the growing number of games moving away from 2026.

In the case of Squadron 42, however, the GTA 6 connection comes directly from Chris Roberts rather than from outside speculation.

That makes the delay particularly interesting. Grand Theft Auto VI is already powerful enough to influence another major game's launch strategy more than a year before its scheduled release.

Whether more developers will make similar decisions remains to be seen. For now, Squadron 42 is joining the growing group of games heading toward 2027, while Rockstar's next Grand Theft Auto prepares to take over one of the biggest release windows in recent gaming history.

Squadron 42 is currently targeting Q2 2027 for PC.
