Metroid Prime Origins Turns Metroid Prime Into a 2D NES-Style Adventure
Metroid Prime Origins is a new fan-made project that transforms Metroid Prime into a 2D, NES-inspired adventure. Instead of the first-person 3D gameplay of the original, this ambitious demake reimagines Samus Aran's journey in the style of the classic 2D Metroid games.
Created by Lv.4 GAMES, Metroid Prime Origins features original sprites, sound effects, music, and gameplay designed around a classic 2D Metroid experience. It is not simply a graphical remake of Prime, but a fresh adaptation that attempts to capture the atmosphere and exploration of the original game in a completely different format.
According to Nintendo Life, the project brings elements of Metroid Prime into a side-scrolling adventure, including its exploration and combat. The result is an unusual take on one of Nintendo's most popular GameCube-era games.
Metroid Prime Reimagined as a 2D Metroid Game
The idea is particularly interesting because of the history of the series. The original Metroid launched on the NES in 1986 as a 2D action-adventure game, while Metroid Prime later moved the franchise into a first-person 3D world. Metroid Prime Origins essentially reverses that evolution, taking Prime back to a 2D format inspired by the games that started the series.
The project also demonstrates how creative the Metroid fan community can be. Rather than simply recreating the original game, Lv.4 GAMES has created its own interpretation of Metroid Prime, complete with a retro-inspired visual and audio style.
Available Now for Windows
According to the project's creator, Metroid Prime Origins is now available to download for Windows. The fan game was developed by Lv.4 GAMES together with a team of artists, musicians and other contributors from the Metroid community.
The developers also emphasize that no generative AI was used during development. All pixel art, music and sound effects were created by fans, while the in-game lore has been rewritten based on the original NTSC release of Metroid Prime.
The project is distributed as a free Windows download. As with many Nintendo fan projects, its long-term availability cannot be guaranteed.
