Nintendo has officially revealed Metroid Ravenous, a brand-new 2D adventure starring Samus Aran and coming to Nintendo Switch 2.
The game will launch on January 28, 2027. Nintendo also showed the first gameplay during its latest Direct, giving fans a closer look at some of the new abilities Samus will have at her disposal.
While Metroid Ravenous keeps the series' familiar 2D exploration at its core, Samus has several new ways to move around and deal with enemies. She can run across water, warp through the air and perform finishing attacks. The gameplay also shows Samus feeding on defeated enemies, which appears to be one of the game's new mechanics.
New Abilities for Samus
The gameplay footage puts a strong focus on movement and combat. Samus can quickly move through the environment, use new abilities to reach previously inaccessible areas and get up close to enemies for finishing attacks.
Nintendo has not revealed every detail about the game yet, but the footage suggests that these new abilities will play an important role in exploration as well as combat.
Metroid Ravenous will also be supported by amiibo. Nintendo has announced a new Samus amiibo and a Chozo Statue amiibo. A separate Samus amiibo will also be included with the game's Special Edition.
Special Edition and Release Date
The Special Edition will include the game, a steel game case and the special Samus amiibo. Nintendo has not yet announced the price of this edition.
The standard version of Metroid Ravenous is listed for £49.99 / $59.99 on the Nintendo eShop. Pre-orders are also scheduled to open later today.
Metroid Ravenous is set to launch on January 28, 2027. With its new movement options, combat abilities and focus on exploration, it looks set to give Samus another very different 2D adventure.
