Kingdom Hearts IV Confirmed for Switch 2 in Late 2027 with New Trailer

The wait for Kingdom Hearts IV finally has a clearer ending. During Disney's D23 Entertainment Showcase, Square Enix revealed a brand-new trailer for the highly anticipated action RPG, confirming that the next chapter in Sora's journey is scheduled to launch in late 2027.
Even more importantly for Nintendo fans, Kingdom Hearts IV is officially coming to Nintendo Switch 2. The game is also planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, making this a multi-platform release for one of Square Enix's most anticipated RPGs.
A New Kingdom Hearts World Inspired by Pixar's Coco
The biggest surprise in the new trailer is the reveal of Pixar's Coco as a new world in Kingdom Hearts IV. The footage takes Sora into the colourful Land of the Dead, introducing an entirely different setting for the series and bringing Pixar's distinctive visual style into the Kingdom Hearts universe.
The trailer gives fans a substantial look at the Coco-inspired setting, including its Mexican-inspired architecture and the striking visuals of the Land of the Dead. While Square Enix is still keeping many story details under wraps, the new world has already given fans plenty to speculate about.
It is also an interesting choice for Kingdom Hearts. The series has always built its identity around bringing together Disney characters and worlds with Square Enix's own characters and mythology. Adding Coco introduces a world centred around family, memory and the connection between life and death — themes that fit surprisingly well with the emotional storytelling Kingdom Hearts is known for.
Sora, Donald and Goofy Return
The new trailer also gives fans another look at Sora and his familiar companions. Donald Duck and Goofy are once again part of the adventure, reinforcing the sense that Kingdom Hearts IV is continuing the journey rather than starting over with an entirely new cast.
There is still plenty we don't know. Square Enix has not revealed the full list of worlds, detailed combat mechanics or the complete story surrounding Sora's new adventure. The trailer is largely focused on atmosphere, characters and the worlds players can expect to visit.
That mystery is arguably part of the appeal. Kingdom Hearts IV has been kept surprisingly quiet since its original announcement, so every new piece of footage gives fans something new to analyse. The arrival of Coco is particularly interesting because it raises the possibility of even more Pixar worlds joining the game.
Kingdom Hearts IV Is Coming in Late 2027
For now, the official release window is simply late 2027. There is no exact release date yet, so fans will have to wait for Square Enix to provide more information.
Still, the confirmation is significant. After years of waiting for more information, Kingdom Hearts IV finally has a release window, a growing list of platforms and a major new world to look forward to.
For Nintendo players, there is an especially interesting development: Kingdom Hearts IV will be playable on Nintendo Switch 2. If Square Enix can deliver the full experience on Nintendo's newer hardware, the Switch 2 version could become one of the most interesting ways to experience Sora's next adventure.
