Disney has officially recognized Kingdom Hearts as one of its nine billion-dollar franchises, underscoring the remarkable success of the long-running collaboration between Disney and Square Enix. The milestone refers to the Kingdom Hearts franchise as a whole, rather than the upcoming Kingdom Hearts IV, and reflects the series' commercial success across games, merchandise, and other areas.
Since its debut in 2002, Kingdom Hearts has built a loyal global fanbase by combining original characters with iconic Disney worlds and characters from the Final Fantasy universe. Over the years, the franchise has expanded through multiple mainline games, spin-offs, and collections across several platforms, creating one of gaming's most unique crossover universes.
The announcement comes as fans eagerly await Kingdom Hearts IV, which is currently in development at Square Enix. Although the studio has remained quiet about the game's release window, previous trailers have teased a new chapter for Sora, featuring a more realistic art style alongside the return of familiar Disney-inspired adventures.
Being recognized as a billion-dollar franchise also reinforces Disney's continued confidence in the series. While no new projects beyond Kingdom Hearts IV have been officially announced, the franchise's commercial success makes future games, merchandise, and other media adaptations increasingly likely.
For longtime fans, the milestone is another reminder of just how successful Kingdom Hearts has become over more than two decades. With Kingdom Hearts IV still in development, the billion-dollar recognition gives the series an impressive backdrop as it prepares for its next major chapter.
