SEGA has announced that Sonic Frontiers has officially surpassed five million copies sold worldwide. The latest sales milestone confirms that the open-zone adventure continues to perform well years after its launch, making it one of the most successful modern entries in the Sonic series.
Released in late 2022, Sonic Frontiers took the franchise in a bold new direction by replacing traditional linear stages with large open environments known as the Starfall Islands. Players are free to explore, complete puzzles, battle powerful enemies, and unlock new abilities while progressing through the game's story. The new formula was a significant departure from previous Sonic titles and attracted both longtime fans and newcomers.
The game received generally positive reviews from critics and players. While some early feedback pointed to technical issues, repetitive objectives, and occasional camera problems, many praised the sense of speed, exploration, soundtrack, and the fresh gameplay direction. SEGA also continued to support the game with multiple free content updates, adding new challenges, playable characters, and additional story content that helped maintain player interest.
Reaching more than five million copies sold is another major achievement for SEGA and demonstrates that the company's decision to evolve the Sonic formula has paid off. The success of Sonic Frontiers has also influenced the future of the franchise, with SEGA previously stating that the game's open-zone gameplay will serve as the foundation for upcoming Sonic titles.
Sonic Frontiers is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
