IRON NEST Is a Surprise Steam Hit With 98% Positive Reviews and 17,000+ Players

IRON NEST: Heavy Turret Simulator is not your typical artillery game. Instead of controlling soldiers, tanks, or an entire army, you operate a gigantic 5,000-ton turret from inside a massive war machine. The result is a surprisingly methodical experience that puts calculation and precision at the centre of combat.

A Battleship Without the Ocean

At first glance, IRON NEST might sound like a strange take on a naval combat game. There are no ships to steer and no fleet to command. Instead, the game puts the player inside an enormous land-based artillery installation.

The basic idea is surprisingly close to Battleship: you need to determine where an enemy is located and then work out how to hit it. The difference is that IRON NEST turns that simple concept into a detailed artillery simulation.

Every Shot Requires Preparation

Finding a target is only part of the challenge. Players use an interactive tactical map to work with coordinates and measurements before preparing the enormous turret for firing.

The game also puts a strong emphasis on operating the machinery itself. Elevation, positioning, ammunition and other systems all play a role in preparing a shot, meaning that simply knowing where the enemy is doesn't guarantee a hit.

That makes every successful strike feel more deliberate than the typical point-and-click artillery attack. A mistake in the calculations can send an enormous shell nowhere near its intended target.

A Strange Alternate History

IRON NEST takes place in an alternate-history version of Spain during the late 1920s. In this version of history, the monarchy still holds power while a republican uprising spreads across the country.

The setting gives the game its distinctive dieselpunk atmosphere, combining massive machinery with an old-fashioned military aesthetic. The developers have also built a campaign around this fictional version of history rather than recreating the real Spanish Civil War.

More Than Just Firing a Giant Cannon

There is more to IRON NEST than simply finding targets and pulling the trigger. The game features procedurally generated objectives, multiple challenge modes, leaderboards, a handcrafted story, newspaper reports, unlockable ammunition and abilities, and 15 regions to explore.

The developers are also aiming to make the machinery itself an important part of the experience. The turret takes time to move, while the player can use that downtime to deal with other tasks inside the installation.

Why IRON NEST Stands Out

There are plenty of war games that let players fire enormous weapons, but IRON NEST takes a much narrower approach. Instead of making the player feel like an all-powerful commander, it focuses on the job of actually operating the weapon.

That combination of tactical planning, manual controls and alternate-history world-building makes IRON NEST an unusual addition to the strategy and simulation genre.

IRON NEST Is Available on PC

IRON NEST: Heavy Turret Simulator is available on PC, with a free demo also available through Steam. The game is developed by the two-person team of Nick Talmers and Dominik Latos, who have built the project around their shared interest in artillery, machinery and dieselpunk.

If you've ever wondered what it would be like to operate a gigantic artillery turret instead of simply ordering one to fire, IRON NEST offers a rather unusual answer.
