Mini Review: Zero Racers (Virtual Boy) – Is This F-Zero Spin-Off The VB's Long-Lost Killer App?
From zero to hero. Editor's note: Due to the low resolution and peculiarities of how screengrabs display for Virtual Boy games on NSO, all the screens here are Nintendo press shots.
Zero Racers is the most fun I have ever had in a Virtual Boy headset. The game is a spin-off of the popular F-Zero series, and it offers a unique racing experience that is both challenging and enjoyable. The gameplay is fast-paced, with a variety of tracks and obstacles that keep the player engaged.
One of the standout features of Zero Racers is its use of the Virtual Boy's 3D capabilities. The game's visuals are simple but effective, with a vibrant color palette and clear lines that help to create a sense of depth. The 3D effect is not overwhelming, but it does add an extra layer of immersion to the gameplay.
The more I play it, the more it feels like it could have been a killer app for Nintendo’s doomed VR headset had it come out in 1996. The game's unique blend of racing and 3D graphics could have been a game-changer for the Virtual Boy, and it's a shame that it didn't get the chance to prove itself.
30 years later, it is hard not to wonder what might have been, but at least Zero Racers finally made it to the starting line. For Virtual Boy enthusiasts and F-Zero fans, this game is a must-play. It's a testament to the potential of the Virtual Boy and a reminder of what could have been.
