Phantom Blade Zero has revealed a surprising detail about its development: martial arts legend Donnie Yen has been working behind the scenes as a creative consultant on the game's kung fu choreography since 2023.
Yen is best known for his roles in movies such as Ip Man, Ip Man 2 and other action films that helped establish him as one of Hong Kong's most respected martial arts stars. His involvement in Phantom Blade Zero goes beyond simply lending his name to the project. He has been helping shape the game's kungfu choreography alongside his stunt team.
Donnie Yen Helped Shape the Combat
That involvement could be particularly important for Phantom Blade Zero, a game built around fast, cinematic martial arts combat. The developers describe its style as kungfupunk, combining traditional Chinese martial arts with a darker, stylized world inspired by wuxia and steampunk.
Instead of simply recreating movie-style fights, Yen's experience gives the development team access to someone who has spent decades designing, performing and directing action sequences. That could help explain why the game's combat has looked so fluid and cinematic in previous gameplay footage.
Yen is also part of the game's cast. He plays Mó Yuan, the father of protagonist Soul, making his involvement more than a behind-the-scenes collaboration.
Phantom Blade Zero Is Getting Closer
The timing of the reveal is notable. Phantom Blade Zero is scheduled to launch on October 29, 2026, with the game coming to PlayStation 5 and PC. The Steam version is already available to wishlist, with Steam listing the game under App ID 4115450.
S-GAME has also released a new extended gameplay trailer showing more of the game's combat, story and characters. An upcoming dedicated State of Play presentation is set to give players an even closer look at the game on August 18.
A Martial Arts Legend Behind the Scenes
Donnie Yen's involvement doesn't automatically guarantee that Phantom Blade Zero will deliver perfect combat, but it makes the game's martial arts focus considerably more interesting. This isn't simply a celebrity cameo: Yen has reportedly been involved with the choreography since the game's development began.
With its fast-paced swordplay, wuxia-inspired world and cinematic presentation, Phantom Blade Zero is already one of the more distinctive action games coming in 2026. Having a martial arts veteran like Donnie Yen helping shape its fights only makes the upcoming release more intriguing.
