Twitch is facing criticism after introducing a setting that allows streamers' channel content to be used to train generative AI models across Amazon by default. Creators who do not want to participate must manually opt out through their account settings.
Twitch announced the change on August 12, 2026, saying the new setting gives creators control over whether their channel content can be used for generative AI training. The opt-out approach, however, has already sparked debate over consent and creator control.
Generative AI Training Is Enabled by Default
According to Twitch, eligible channel content can be used to improve generative AI models capable of creating or synthesizing text, audio, images, and video.
The company gives audio as one example. Stream audio could potentially help improve models used for technologies such as speech-to-text, while also contributing to AI development across Amazon.
The main controversy is that creators are included by default. Rather than actively agreeing to generative AI training, streamers have to change their account settings if they do not want their content used.
What Content Can Be Used?
Twitch says the policy can cover a wide range of channel content, including streams, VODs, Clips, Highlights, stream chat, and text and images published on a channel.
Chat also has an important catch: if you post in someone else's stream chat, that channel's settings determine whether your messages can be included in generative AI training.
Opting Out Doesn't Disable All AI
Turning off generative AI training does not disable every AI or machine learning system used by Twitch.
Features such as AutoMod and captions can continue to work. Twitch says these systems serve different purposes and are not the same as retaining creator content to train a model designed to generate new content.
Some AI-supported features also have their own settings, meaning creators can manage them separately from the generative AI training option.
The Comment That Made the Backlash Worse
The opt-out system has become even more controversial because of a comment from Twitch Chief Product Officer Mike Minton.
During a Twitch livestream about the policy, Minton was asked why creators weren't simply asked to opt in. His response was blunt: "If it was opt-in, nobody would opt in."
The comment quickly spread online, with critics arguing that it effectively acknowledges that Twitch expects creators would reject the use of their content if given an explicit choice.
The reaction has focused largely on consent. Some creators are comfortable with AI technology and see potential benefits, while others believe generative AI training should be strictly opt-in.
