Discord is trying to use fewer of your PC's resources. The desktop app has already received several performance improvements that reduce CPU usage, while a new Game Mode appears to be in testing that could make Discord even lighter while you're gaming.
That's particularly relevant for PC gamers who leave Discord running alongside their games. Voice chat, animations and other interface effects continue running in the background, even when you're mainly focused on your game.
Discord has already reduced CPU usage
As part of its recent desktop updates, Discord moved its app to Electron 42 and changed the way it uses the framework. According to Discord, these changes reduced p50 CPU usage by around 17%.
Discord then made another set of desktop rendering optimizations. These reduced p50 CPU usage by roughly another 3%.
Here, p50 refers to the median measurement, so these numbers don't mean that every Discord user will see exactly the same reduction.
There is also a small catch. The Electron 42 update increased Discord's p50 memory usage by around 4%. So while CPU usage is moving in the right direction, Discord hasn't suddenly become a lightweight application across the board.
A Game Mode could take things further
Discord may now be looking at a more direct solution for gamers.
A new Game Mode has been spotted in the Discord client by Discord Previews. The experimental feature is designed to detect when a game is running and automatically reduce animations and visual effects inside Discord.
The idea is pretty simple: if you're busy playing a game, Discord doesn't need to spend as many resources animating parts of its interface that you're probably not looking at anyway.
Based on the information discovered so far, Game Mode is intended to reduce Discord's CPU and GPU usage while a game is running. That could leave more resources available for the game itself.
There is an important caveat, though. Game Mode has not been officially announced by Discord. There is no confirmed release date, and experimental features can still be changed or dropped before they reach the public version of the app.
Discord already has a similar option
The idea isn't completely new. Discord already has a Reduced Motion setting that limits some animations and visual effects.
Game Mode appears to take a similar approach, but automate it when Discord detects that you're playing a game. Instead of manually changing your settings before launching a demanding title, Discord could simply reduce its own activity in the background.
That could be useful for people who keep Discord open throughout the day and only occasionally start a game.
What about RAM and screen sharing?
There are still some unanswered questions about how much difference Game Mode would actually make.
The information currently available focuses on CPU and GPU usage. There is no indication that Game Mode will significantly reduce Discord's RAM footprint. That's worth keeping in mind, especially since Discord's own recent figures showed a roughly 4% increase in median memory usage after the Electron 42 upgrade.
It's also unclear how the feature would behave during Discord screen sharing. Sharing a game while talking to friends can put additional pressure on a PC, so it remains to be seen whether Game Mode would make any difference in that situation.
For now, there are also no official benchmarks showing how many frames per second a game could gain from the feature. Discord hasn't promised a specific performance improvement either.
The big question is whether Discord's experimental Game Mode will actually make it into the public client. If it does, gamers may finally get a simple way to tell Discord: when the game starts, stay out of the way.
